Most sites have search features nowadays. Sometimes they’re decent, sometimes they’re terrible. Sometimes they give you advanced sorting options, sometimes they don’t. Forget all that roulette and let the master do it: search any site with your warm and fuzzy Google. For example the following query narrows results to only those from voyhere.com:

search terms site:voyhere.com

Note the use of the top- and second-level domains only; don’t use any www or anything. Now you can employ/enjoy all of Google’s search refinements. If Google’s not your flavor I’m sure yours has the equivalent.

1: Click speaker icon

2: Click Mixer

3: Put your junk in that box

Not only is selectively muting apps highly useful, but this is also the place where you can permanently change the relative volume of anything which doesn’t have a volume knob.

Addendum 11/12/09: Now Ubuntu 9.10 has come on board with this capability. Right click the sound icon and enter Sound Preferences (or via System->Preferences->Volume Control). It’s on the Applications tab:

I haven’t been able to get the stop time to work with embedding though. But if you use the Share link on the splicd site, the start/stop works (like this). But you can’t embed that. Also, getting at the exact second you wish to link to seems quirky, but this is a nice service if you want to link a specific point in a long video without asking the viewer to seek it themselves. Another nice aspect of this is it seems YouTube doesn’t bother to load the portion before which you linked to. This is all possible because YouTube recently enabled deep linking to its videos.

#1. Do you use the ”WindowsKey+E” shortcut to open Explorer? Of course you do. But the window opens up small, don’t it. Here’s how to simply make the default size of that window larger. Open a new Explorer window. Resize it to where you’d like. Now hold Shift while you click the X in the corner. This should save that window size for next time. Works for me; let me know if not for you. If that didn’t work, try Ctrl-clicking the X. Or Ctrl+Shift+click. Damn Vista is weird.

#2. (If you have Aero or some other undefined visual capability enabled): You should see the window in the above step evaporate in slow-mo. You can also hold Shift while you minimize a window to see slow-mo. And it also works while restoring minimized windows from the task bar.

So a couple months ago I undertook the task of going through my CD collection of ~500 and ripping the ones which were not already in my iTunes library. This amounted to about half of them. I choose to rip at 160kbps. This seems like a good compromise between size, for the iPhone, and quality, for the hi-fi if I were to play them thusly. Oh and make sure you rip as MP3, you don’t want any DRM in case you decide to port your stuff somewhere else.

My dvd-rom drive ripped through them at about 42x, so each one only took 1-2 minutes. I also went through and attached album cover art for the ones which iTunes wasn’t able to find on its own.

This process was somewhat laborious, yet satisfying. I was going to pursue one of the apparently many software solutions for accomplishing the cover art attachment, but I ended up just doing it manually. Let me offer some tips.

1. iTunes is able to conjure and adhere a large number of covers for you on its own, assuming you’ve utilized the CDDB for naming. So your first move is have it pour through your collection via the following option. It should apply album art for any albums you’ve ripped which happen to be purchasable in the iTunes store:

2. Moving forward, you’ll want iTunes to be attaching album art for you as you rip new CDs, when possible. Set that up via this option. (Note this setting is on the General tab in versions prior to 8.0):

3. Now the meat of your task. You’ve got to go through your coverflow basically, and see which albums don’t have art attached. Then you’ve got to obtain it. I choose Amazon.com. You find the album there, then click “See larger image”. Sometimes there are a few versions of it, find your favorite, some are worse/smaller than others. Save the image in a folder on your desktop. Now to attach the image.

Align your iTunes window on the left of your screen. Align your folder with the artwork on the right, and display it as thumbnails. Highlight all the songs of the album. Right click your selected songs and select “Get Info”. Drag the icon into the artwork box. Press ok. Done!

Let’s assume that you are trying to play BioShock, arguably the best PC game of 2007, on your Windows Vista (or 7?) PC, and are having the annoying problem of the game freezing on you as it tries to load the game. You can run in windowed mode, but that’s not going to cut it. Let us also assume you have a tablet pen, because, let’s face it, you’re awesome. And it’s actually probably related to your annoying freeze.

Here’s how to fix it:

Go to Windows Control panel -> Programs and Features

Click “Turn Windows features on or off” on the left.

Look for “Tablet PC Optional Components” (or perhaps “Mobile Tablet PC”)

Uncheck it and press OK.

Your tablet will still work. The only side effect should be that some of the annoying tablet features that came with your Wacom driver will be disabled. It’s a win/win in my opinion. Or if you must have them, you can just re-enable them when you’re done with the game.

(via)

Update1: This page still gets a fair number of hits; welcome visitors. I thought I’d throw in another bone, since I’m playing through this game again myself in prep for Bioshock 2. Let’s fix another annoyance while we’re at it.

Here’s how to get rid of the intro screens which take like 30 seconds before you can start the game each time. To do this, edit your Bioshock shortcut to look like the below screenshot. (In the target line, you’re adding -nointro.) (There should be a space between that last quotation mark and the dash.) (If you’re accessing your shortcut from your Games menu, you right click it, Customize, then click Edit.)

Update2: another tip. If you have issue understanding some of the voices in the game like I did, rather than turn on subtitles you can simply turn down the sound effect and music volumes, then turn up the system volume to compensate. Recordings and radio messages can be replayed and read in the tape section of the map screen.
